If you ever want to be taken off our mailing list just reply to this or any email from us saying so & we’ll remove you right away. :D
On to the August meeting goodies!
We’d like to take a moment to thank Theresa of Quilt Essential Fabrics. We were so saddened to hear she is closing her store in Abbotsford. We were very fortunate to have her as our guild’s  gracious meeting host for our first year, and want to thank her tremendously for helping us get started and for her support of our guild. We’ll miss her beautiful store, and her great sewing advice and ideas. From the Fraser Valley Modern Quilt Guild, we wish you all the best and huge thanks to you!
This month, we’d like to welcome Sonja Callaghan of Artisania, http://artisania.wordpress.com, who is going to be having a paper piecing workshop with us in September.
She’s coming to our August meeting and will share with us how she got hooked into paper piecing, her design process, her work for Quiltmaker Magazine, and a show and tell of some of her favourite projects and patterns.
If you’d like to sign up for her September workshop, you can do so at the August meeting, here are the details:
September 29th 10-4pm, $40 (includes two patterns and instructions).
Learn how to paper piece in the least painful way possible, with Sonja Callaghan holding your hand every step of the way. We’ll use our finished blocks to make a quick and easy tote bag.
Gnomeling, mushroom and lil’ fox patterns provided, along with extra templates and instructions for making your tote bag.
You can also email us to get signed up and bring or mail your payment. Contact us for info.
Laura Miron will be sharing some photos from her recent visit to the Sisters Quilt Show!
Cynthia has some of her fabric collection, Kona Modern Quilts, to do a challenge with our guild! The VMQG will also be participating.
Each person will get one half yard cut of fabric, we have enough for 15 people to play along.
You can make whatever you like with it, a quilt, a bag, pouch, potholders, or anything you can dream up with it.  Please add only other Kona Modern Quilts prints, or Kona Solids. No other prints please!
The prints will be available shortly at the Bent Needle in Mission, and Spool of Thread in Vancouver- please consider checking with them first before buying online, & support our local quilt & fabric shops!
We’d like to have finished projects to take photos of at our October meeting to share with the design team at Robert Kaufman.
Follow up on this project- has anyone completed this or started this? Let us know as we may postpone it to a later date or cancel it.
The Colour Palette Challenge continues this month, as always participation is optional.
We’ve extended it to allow extra time but if you have your project done or in progress  bring your chosen palette, fabrics, projects in progress, finished quilts, etc. to show & tell,  we wanna see what you’re working on!
We’d like to see finished projects, at least to quilt top stage, ready for August’s meeting.
If you need more info, visit our website here: http://www.fvmodernquilt.com and click “Challenges”
Keep in mind you do not have to follow the example pattern, but it’s a fun way to play with colour using simple blocks of colour too. Have fun & maybe even try a new colour palette you’ve never tried before!
August Fat Quarter Swap theme is   Fall prints (foliage/leaves)
If you wish to participate, bring 4 FQ’s meeting this theme in a ziploc bag. You wil be given a ticket with a number- place half in the bag & keep the other half. At the end of the night you’ll retrieve your bag with 4 new FQ’s in it!
Things to keep in mind:
Do not prewash your fabrics.
Quilt shop quality only- 100% cotton, no poly/blends, or cotton broadcloth, please.
It’s ok to pull from your stash but please be sure the fabric you choose meets the theme of the month and is modern in style.
A fat quarter is 18″x21″ or 18″x22″. Fabric not meeting size/theme will not be swapped.
Please choose modern style fabrics- for a list of inspiration of what modern is, and isn’t,  view/download the list of themes and guidelines on the Challenges page on our website:
September marks our 2nd year anniversary and we wanna have a fun meeting to celebrate! We are planning an all day sew-in anniversary party with lots of doorprizes and fun- stay tuned for date & details!
We’re giving some advance notice as October will be our next De-Stash! For those who missed out on the first one, it was so much fun! You can check out the blog post from our first destash here: http://www.fvmodernquilt.com/monthly-meetings/march-and-april-meeting-wrap-ups
Start preparing now & dig out anything you want to destash & swap for something new!
As before, here are some general guidelines:
We’d like to give you the chance to clean up your sewing room, sweep away the dust on old craft supplies, share crafty/sewing/quilting books or magazines, and share some crafty goodies with other members of our guild who might be able to use them.
What is it that they say, “One quilter’s trash is another quilter’s treasure!”
Here’s how to play along if you’re interested in joining in the fun:
Everyone who brings something can participate. You should bring at least a small grocery bag full of stuff so everyone contributes a fair amount of items to destash. Everything will be placed on tables and we’ll let everyone grab what they want on the count of 3! Sharpen those elbows ladies!
Those who don’t contribute can help themselves after everyone who did contribute is done if they want.
Stuff that’s allowed:
Anything sewing or quilting related:
- fabrics of any kind
- patterns
- crafty/sewing/quilting magazine & books
- notions
- packaged bags of scraps with pieces at least 2″x2″ (put them in a ziploc or small bag)
Plus any miscellaneous craft supplies you’d like to destash, for example:
beads, felt, paper, scrapbooky stuff, yarn, crafting tools, etc. etc.
Keep in mind though we do not want a bunch of garbage leftover at the end- we want anything that’s left to be usable and to be donated to a local thrift store or any other guild or group that can use it.
Please note what’s NOT allowed
- Garbage/small loose scraps of fabric/batting
- used, damaged, stained, or worn fabric unless it’s vintage and still usable
- anything you wouldn’t want yourself- as in you’d throw it away rather than donate it
Anything leftover will go to the thrift store/charity/MCC quilt groups
We’ll need to designate 2-4 people to do the dropoffs/donations/recycle- any volunteers please let us know & be ready to take some stuff home/to the thrift store drop offs after the meeting.
And finally, we’d  like to recognize our hardworking volunteers who help us keep the meetings and events running smoothly, and who help plan and prepare for meetings in advance. Big thank you’s to everyone who has been so wonderfully volunteering their time and efforts to help us make our guild the happy, positive, and inspiring place it is!
